Putting Life into perspective one rock at a time

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top, rocks about 2" in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full?

They agreed it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them in to the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed. He asked his students again if the jar was full? They agreed yes, it was.

The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. “Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this is your life..."

“The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children" Anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed.

“The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but on a smaller scal". The pebbles represent things like your job, your house, your car.

“The sand is everything else. The small stuff". If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks. The same goes for your life!

If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, material things, you will never have room for the things that are truly most important. Pay attention to the things that are critical in your life. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix things. Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just pebbles and sand.”

So here we come 2011...

So whats the plan for the year ahead? as we look into the year that has so swiftly left us and is now a thing of the past we would be unfair not to look at what has come and gone...

this last Sunday we had a chance to share in the blessings that we received and how they have affected us, I didn't get to share mine so here they are:

  • Very happy in a job that has opened huge doors to be help those in need
  • There was a chance of an addition to our Family, that door was closed in His all knowing and understanding of things
  • D finally got to stop working due to the change in job
there are many more things that i could mention but this would be the longest post ever... there is just one thing that needs to be mentioned and that is the issue of Faith, so often this is something that is spoken about but very rarely practised! i really think that the past year has showed that despite how we try to put God in a box He keeps revealing how big He really is! This was something that really struck home to me... as much as we think we know what the future holds we don't!
so with that being said what can we expect in 2011? "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart"

  • A better husband
  • A faithful servant
  • A better Steward
  • A better Employee
  • Never underestimate God and what he can do!
